RUNNING TRACK CUSHION COATING

PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Application of cushion coating to asphalt, asphalt rubber or latex rubber running track.

1.04 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. Provide one of Acrylic Primer over prepared surface.

B. Provide [ six ] coats of Cushion Coating over prepared surface after Acrylic Primer has dried thoroughly. Minimum dry film thickness of 6mm.

C. Place lines on surface in accordance with National Association of State High School Associations requirements.

Standard color is black. Custom color matching is also available from Neyra Industries, Inc. Total dry film thickness for six coat system will be a minimum of 6mm.(<1/4 in.).

1.05 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data

1. Submit manufacturers printed product data sheets and application practices.

B. Certification

1. Provide copy of certification from manufacturer stating applicator is qualified installer.

1.06 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Certified Applicator of latex cushion coat manufacturer.

1.07 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Apply coating in dry weather when pavement and atmospheric temperatures are sixty (60) degrees F. or above and are anticipated to remain above fifty (50) degrees F. for twenty four (24) hours after completing application.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 MANUFACTURER

A. Neyra Industries, Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio

2.02 MATERIALS

A. Cushion coat, Sport-Mat Supreme, by Neyra Industries, Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio

1. Minimum of 3 lb. per gallon of rubber granules.

2. Maximum water content, fifty-five (55) percent by volume (ASTM solid test D2939).

3. Minimum of 0.50 lb. per gallon of pure synthetic mineral oxide color pigment.

4. Containing ultra-violet light screening agents.

B. Primer, Dynabond, water borne latex

C. Line paint: PermaLine Marking Paint - Water-based acrylic striping paint recommended by cushion coat manufacturer.

D. Patching material: Hot mix asphalt.

E. Crack Sealant: Acryl-A-Seal, minimum dry solids by volume sixty nine (69) percent.

F. Mixing water:

1. Potable and free from harmful soluble salts.

2. Temperature of the water: minimum fifty (50) degrees F./ten (10) degrees C.

2.03 MIXES

A. Dynabond Primer - Dilute with up to four (4) parts water to one (1) part Dynabond.

B. Sport-Mat, Dilute with one (1) part water to six (6) parts Sport-Mat.

2.04 EQUIPMENT

A. Use only equipment capable of keeping mixture homogeneous at all times and that is capable of applying required coating weight evenly over entire surface.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Inspect existing pavement surfaces for conditions and defects that will adversely affect quality of work, and which cannot be put into an acceptable condition through normal preparatory work as specified below. Do not place coating if defects exist, notify Architect/Engineer.

B. Starting installation constitutes contractor’s acceptance of surface as suitable for installation.

3.02 PREPARATION

A. EXISTING ASPHALT BASE RUNNING TRACK

2. All cracks shall be cleaned thoroughly and blown out with compressed air.

a. Cracks one eighth (1/8) inch shall be filled with acrylic crack sealant.

b. Cracks greater than three quarter (3/4) inch shall be filled with Elastomeric hot applied crack sealant.

3. Cleaning

a. Thoroughly clean surfaces to be coated to remove all foreign debris (dirt, silt, gravel, leaves, etc.) using mechanically powered forced air sweepers, mechanical street sweepers, steel bristle brooms and/or high pressure water.

b. Thoroughly scrape mud areas and scrub wash with clean water.

c. If fungus is present, use a two (2) percent sodium hypochlorite solution to clean affected area. Rinse thoroughly.

4. Protection: Protect adjacent curbs, walks, fences, and other items from receiving color coat or primer.

B. NEW ASPHALT BASE RUNNING TRACK

1. Cleaning

a. Thoroughly clean surfaces to be coated.

2. Protection: Protect adjacent curbs, walks, fences, and other items from receiving color coat or resurfacer.

3. New pavements which have been accepted by Architect/Owner, shall be allowed to cure, and pass the "no water break" test before application. Cast one or two gallons of clean water from a suitable clean container (such as a five (5) gallon pail) out on the surface. The water should sheet out and wet the surface uniformly without ribboning, crawling, or showing oil rings.

3.03 APPLICATION

A. When making mixes, add water first, then agitate. Keep mixture homogeneous prior to beginning application and during entire time mixture is being applied.

B. Apply primer and coats uniformly over the entire surface per schedule and in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

C. Allow adequate time between applications for prior coat to dry thoroughly before applying next coat. Primer coat can be sealed over in one (1) hour. Cushion coats can normally be re-coated after four (4) hours of good drying with sun. Upon completion of final coat keep all foot traffic off sealed surface. Allow the final coat to cure at least forty eight (48) hours, under good drying conditions, before allowing foot traffic on surface. Less favorable conditions will require longer drying times.

D. Finished surface shall be free of pinholes, or uneven distribution and shall have a uniform appearance.

E. Lane Lines and Event Markings:

1. Lane lines, start and finish lines, and event markings all shall be accurately positioned and marked in accordance with current rules of the [ specify one: Amateur Athletic Association, National Association of Intercollegiate Activities, National Collegiate Athletic Association, or National Federation of State High School Associations. ] A drawing showing the proposed line layout shall be submitted to the Owner’s Representative for approval prior to application of any lines on the track surface.

2. Paint Quality Standard - Paint shall be with a paint recommended or approved by the manufacturer of the surface course finish material; however on asphalt bound systems the use of traffic, oil, alkyd, or solvent-vehicle type paints is prohibited. The painting shall be done by skilled mechanics in a workmanlike manner in accordance with the manufacturer’s standard printed instructions.

[ 3. Certification of Lines - Upon completion of the markings the contractor shall furnish the Owner’s representative with five (5) copies of a drawing showing all lines that have been applied. The drawing shall have upon its face a statement, signed and sealed by a licensed professional engineer or land surveyor, certifying that the lines as thus marked are in accordance with rules of the governing authority specified hereinabove. ]

3.04 PROTECTION

A. Barricade coated areas until coating has dried sufficiently for foot traffic.
